En 1989, el Gobierno de España ordenó la liberalización de la televisión, otorgando tres nuevas licencias. Además de Telecinco, Antena 3 recibe otra para emitir en abierto y Canal + una que le permite efectuar emisiones en codificado.

El Grupo Mediaset España Comunicación, con un capital de 12.000 millones de pesetas, obtiene del Gobierno español la licencia de emisión el 25 de agosto de 1989. La composición societaria se distribuía de la siguiente manera:

Fininvest, de Silvio Berlusconi (25%).
Organización Nacional de Ciegos de España (ONCE) (25%);
Ediciones Anaya, de Germán Sánchez Ruipérez (25%);
Juan Fernández Montreal, de Chocolates Trapa (15%);
Ángel Medrano, empresario del sector turístico (10%).

Miguel Durán, Director de la ONCE, fue nombrado Presidente de la cadena y Valerio Lazarov, hasta entonces responsable del Canale 5 italiano -también propiedad de Silvio Berlusconi- fue designado Director General, siendo el encargado de poner en marcha la cadena. History

In 1965 Charles Dolan, who had already done pioneering work in the commercial use of cables, won a franchise to build a cable system in Lower Manhattan in New York. The new system, which Dolan called "Sterling Manhattan Cable", became the first urban underground cable system in the United States. Rather than stringing cable on telephone poles or using microwave antennas to receive the signals, Sterling laid underground cable beneath the streets of Manhattan — because the multitude of tall buildings blocked television signals. In the same year Time Life, Inc. purchased 20 percent of Dolan's company.

Dolan presented his "Green Channel" idea to Time Life management, and though satellite distribution seemed only a distant possibility at the time, he persuaded Time Life to back him. Soon afterwards, on November 8, 1972, "The Green Channel" became "Home Box Office". HBO began using a network of microwave relay towers to distribute its programming.[4][5][6] The first program and film broadcast on HBO, Sometimes a Great Notion, starred Paul Newman and Henry Fonda. It transmitted with a CATV system in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania (a plaque commemorating this event is found in Wilkes-Barre's downtown Public Square).[5] HBO's first sports event was broadcast immediately afterwards, an NHL hockey game from Madison Square Garden featuring the New York Rangers and the Vancouver Canucks.

Sterling Manhattan Cable lost money because the company had only a small subscriber base of 20,000 customers in Manhattan. Dolan's media partner, Time Life, Inc., gained 80-percent control of Sterling and decided to pull the plug on the Sterling Manhattan operation. Time Life dropped the Sterling name to become Manhattan Cable Television and gained control of HBO in March 1973. Gerald Levin replaced Dolan as HBO's President and Chief Executive Officer. In September 1973, Time Life, Inc. completed its acquisition of the pay service. HBO was soon the fastest growing TV pay service in America, but the churn rate was exceptionally high. Subscribers would sample the service for a few weeks, get weary of seeing the same films, and then cancel. HBO was struggling and something had to be done. When HBO first came to Lawrence, Massachusetts, the idea was to allow subscribers to preview the service for free on channel 3. After a month, the service moved to channel 6 and was scrambled. The preview proved popular, obtaining many subscriptions and the concept was used elsewhere

En 1987, nace en Santa Cruz de la Sierra: TeleOriente, Canal 9 precursor de lo que sería la Red Unitel 10 años más tarde. Propiedad de la familia Monasterio, quienes son dueños del Banco Santa Cruz. Al poco tiempo de su nacimiento, TeleOriente se asocia con Illimani de Comunicaciones y se convierte en afiliada de red ATB.

En 1997 llega un gran cambio al panorama televisivo boliviano con la entrada de nuevos empresarios al negocio de los medios. Todo comienza con la compra por parte de Illimani de Comunicaciones de la red ABC y su posterior venta a Tito Asbún, dueño de Cervecería Taquiña. Y en Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Illimani de Comunicaciones termina su sociedad con los Monasterio, empezando a funcionar a través de Canal 5.

Después de arduas negociaciones, el grupo Monasterio se queda con las acciones de Telesistema Boliviano en La Paz y Oruro, dando el primer paso para convertirse en red nacional. En septiembre de 1997 comienza a funcionar la red Unitel vía satélite y al poco tiempo llega con sus emisiones a todas las capitales de departamento.

Desde el inicio de sus transmisiones a nivel nacional hasta su consolidación , Unitel realiza la prueba de una serie de formatos de programación para llegar al primer lugar en audiencia.

El noticiero central de Unitel se llama Tele País y en 1997 es conducido por Julio Cesar Caballero desde la ciudad de La Paz. Trata de emular el estilo de otro gran comunicador social, como es Carlos Mesa. Sin embargo, la fórmula no funciona y se prueban otras hasta la llegada a la jefatura de prensa de José Luis Pomacusi que realiza un enorme cambio al noticiero central de Unitel, Tele País, que es el programa más importante de su programación.

Los cambios iniciales se inician en la titulación del noticiero. Del formato anterior de 'busto parlante' que mostraba el nombre del entrevistado y su cargo, se pasa a describir la situación, como en Telefe noticias. Otro cambio introducido es la presentación de cuadros didácticos, en la que los presentadores leen una serie de datos, impresos en la pantalla para reforzar la noticia. Los precios del dólar, la temperatura, estadísticas, trayectorias profesionales, noticias en detalle, etc. son presentadas en los cuadros.

Hasta ahí los cambios meramente formales del noticiero. Pero hay otras variaciones del estilo en Tele País, que le dan ese toque polémico y controvertido. Por ejemplo la Música Incidental que se adhiere a los reportajes. La tensión que se logra al poner música instrumental dramática genera mayor atención del público.

Los titulares de Tele País también son presentados de una manera diferente. Un presentador al micrófono lee los encabezados, mientras una música crepitante resuena al fondo y se escogen las imágenes más impactantes que se disponga para conmover al público. Los titulares es una sección importantísima del Tele País, llegando a presentar un resumen de todo el informativo creando mayor interés por ver la nota completa. Si bien por años fue el canal informativo más visto, en los últimos años se vio superado en términos de audiencia por Todo Noticias, propiedad del Grupo Clarín. Uno de los posibles motivos de este desplazamiento es que Cablevisión y Multicanal (los dos principales operadores de cable de Argentina, ambos propiedad de Grupo Clarín) habían corrido a Crónica hacia una frecuencia muy alta. Tras una orden del Comfer, Crónica TV fue reinstalado entre las señales cercanas a los canales de aire.

La señal es muy famosa en la Argentina y es reconocida por su carácter sensacionalista, también porque, lo que se refleja en la crudeza de las imágenes y el permanente uso de placas rojas que ocupan toda la pantalla con letras blancas gigantes para anunciar noticias, acompañadas siempre por una marcha militar estadounidense de fondo —The Stars and Stripes Forever de John Philip Sousa—. Muchas veces los títulos rozan la ridiculez, llegando a anunciar un 22 de septiembre que "Faltan 364 días para la próxima primavera". La ironía es otro de los recursos de que se vale la emisora; en un caso en que un conductor en estado de ebriedad casi atropella a un grupo de personas, el canal tituló "Conductor borracho casi provoca una tragedia. Batman único testigo" por encontrarse en el lugar una persona disfrazada de Batman.

En situaciones de dramatismo conmovedor, como el de un niño encerrado a más de 5 m de profundidad en un caño, en San Nicolás de los Arroyos, la "espera" del Canal motivó una acción judicial sumarísima, y se obligó al retiro de la escena "en vivo".

Ecuavisa was founded by Xavier Alvarado Roca and began to transmit programming in 1967 The network began broadcasting from Guayaquil.

With the advent of new technological advancements during the 1970s, Ecuavisa was able to gain the attention of a sizeable portion of Ecuador's television-viewing public by pioneering the introduction of new programming and broadcasting partnerships with regional providers. Ecuavisa also benefited from the advent of colour television, and was the first channel to broadcast in colour.

Many of Ecuador's "celebrities" participated in Ecuavisa's shows throughout the 1980s and 1990s. During these two decades the network showed some of Ecuador's top television shows.

During the 2000s, Ecuavisa launched Ecuavisa International. The channel is broadcast in the United States, on the DirecTV system*** and in Spain on ONO network. In Europe Ecuavisa Internacional is also broadcast digitally and encryption free on the satellite Hispasat.

During the presidency of Rafael Correa, the network, particularly it's flagship opinion maker and pundit Jorge Ortiz, has found itself at odds with the government, which accuses it of manipulating public opinion to suite the interests of the companies and shareholders who provide the capital for Teleamazonas such as the Banco del Pichincha. Several proceedings have taken place against Teleamazonas, culminating on December 23, 2009, when the network was ordered a 72-hour shutdown. This government move immediately prompted a backlash from advocacy groups who claimed to be acting in the interests of freedom of expression.

On September 2010, Fidel Egas sold his shares on Teleamazonas to several groups: 30% to Peruvian media group La República, 48% to a group of Teleamazonas employees and 22% to a group of personal friends. Teleamazonas sale was the result of the mandate of the Ecuadorian Constitution of 2008, which provides that no person may simultaneously hold shares in banks and media
